Upcoming Events
On June 19th Above All Things finally hits bookstores and I’ll be relaunching this website soon as well as doing a few readings in support of it.
I’ll be reading at the Gala event for the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival on June 1st:
Stage A & Gala | June 1, 2012 | 8 pm
Co-operator’s Hall
River Run Centre
Then the following day, June 2nd, at the Annual Joe Burke Wolfe Island Literary Festival with the likes of Dave Bidini, Grace O’Connell, Steven Heighton and more.
Wolfe Island Literary Festival
June 2nd, 4pm
Brophy’s Poing Wolfe Island – take the ferry and follow the signs!
And then on June 28th at the Niagara Literary Arts Festival with details to follow.
And if you’re looking to load up on summer reading I have a couple of good friends who are also launching their books in the next couple of weeks:
And Magnified World by Grace O’Connell.
And last but not least, for now you can also check out the fab profile that Stephanie Earp wrote about me for Kingston Life Magazine.
Kingston Life
When people ask where I’m from, after I explain that I’m a former military brat so moved around a lot, I always add, but Kingston, Kingston’s home.
So I’m thrilled that my friend Stephanie Earp wrote this piece for Kingston Life.
National Poetry Month
It’s National Poetry Month – and while I’ve been out of the poetry game for the past year or so, focusing on fiction, I’m about to plunge back in with my first collection for Wolsak and Wynn. I’m looking forward to getting back into the tiny details of editing poetry, it’ll be a real brain shift.
In conjunction with National Poetry Month the CBC and Canada Writes asked me to answer a few questions. You can read that interview here.
In other news – my fabulous friend Stephanie Earp made me a skirt for Above All Things! It may or may not contain hints and spoilers about the ending, and I”m hoping to wear it for my book launch – the details of which will be announced shortly.
It’s not every girl who gets a themed skirt made for her!
Above All Things
On Monday, my first novel, Above All Things, goes to print and will be available in all fine stores on June 19th.
There will be more news shortly, including upcoming gigs and events and I’ll be relaunching this website in the upcoming weeks to focus more specifically on the novel, George Mallory and Mt. Everest.
In the meantime, you can pre-order the book here; follow me on twitter; or like my facebook page.
A little online interaction.
Sarah Polley’s new movie – Take This Waltz – will be released across Canada and the US in June. As part of the promotion for the movie they’ve created an interactive website called The Conversation where people can go post stories, pictures, songs, poems, expressions, based on the three statements – My heart is… It takes courage to… and When I let go…
I was asked to come up with something to help get the conversation going. If you dig around you might find a poem from my upcoming collection on there somewhere.
And while you’re online go check out The Big Wild. You can help make a new Sarah Harmer video by picking a frame and drawing on it. For every frame that’s completed, MEC and The Big Wild will donate twenty-five cents to PERL – Protecting Escarpment Rural Land.

Yesterday I mentioned that my novel had been picked up in the US. Here’s a great profile of the woman that bought it.
2011-2012
Excuse this post if it seems little brag-y, but 2011 was a pretty crazy year for me.
And it seems I have some things to look forward to in 2012 as well. My first novel, Above All Things, will be out in June – and if these lists are to believed – other people are looking forward to it too.
Actually, Spring 2012 is shaping up to be a good one for quite a few folks I know. Several of my friends, and former classmates at the MFA program at Guelph-Humber, have books coming out too: Grace O’Connell, Aga Maksimowska, and Matt Lennox. There will be a lot of book launches to attend.
But 2011 didn’t end to badly – and gave me a lot to look forward to into 2013. First, my poetry manuscript – Arguments with the Lake – was picked up by Wolsak and Wynn for publication next spring.
And Above All Things made a bit of a splash internationally in the fall at the Frankfurt Book Fair. It will be out in the UK and US in 2013, with Italy and the Netherlands to follow.
First Edition Reading Series
I’m reading Friday Oct. 7 at Backbeat Books and Music in Perth, Ontario – with the fabulous Carolyn Smart and Zoe Whittall.
I’m trying to get it together to read from Above All Things for the first time since it’s been worked at McClelland and Stewart.
Should be a great night.
